Basnet refuses to be released; life normal in capital

Youth Association of Nepal (YAN) chairman Mahesh Basnet has refused to be released from police detention despite release orders from the District Administration Office (DAO) demanding the reason behind his arrest in writing and the release of all other YAN members arrested Thursday.
DAO, Morang had ordered Basnet’s release at the instructions of Home Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara Thursday evening following the talks with UML and YAN representatives in Kathmandu.
Police asked Basnet, who is kept at the eastern regional training centre of Nepal Police, to be released as per the instruction of the DAO. However, Basnet refused to be released saying he won’t be released until all YAN cadres are released and the reason behind his arrest is provided in writing.
He also announced all programmes of agitation announced by his association are in place and that he would not comply with the agreements done with home minister by a team of UML and YAN leaders in Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, life in capital Kathmandu Friday morning is normal. Public and private transport vehicles have operated as on a normal day and market places have started opening.
YAN, which had called a nationwide general for Friday in protest of its chairman Basnet’s arrest, had said the bandh would be withdrawn only if all cadres including Basnet are released. Travel19.tk
